Spring is coming! The days are getting noticeably longer, and given the mild winter we’ve had in Northern Virginia, daffodils are already blooming in our front yard. Wild. In addition to the weather, there are other impending changes in our world – I’m about 17 weeks pregnant with a little boy due in early August. We’re very excited (and *terrified* – with a four-year-old, I’m not sure I remember a single thing about having a newborn…). With temperatures on the rise and spring, many days, already in the air, I’ve been assembling a simple spring maternity capsule wardrobe, 15 pieces of which I highlight below.

Last month, I shared my love of capsule wardrobes and essential winter capsule pieces, 10 pieces I wore religiously throughout the coldest months. This month, we’ll focus on a simple spring capsule for those who are expecting. Of course, this could be expanded, but I like to think about my capsules as if I’m going on a week-long trip: what can I pack that will create multiple, easy-to-style outfits?
Spring Maternity Capsule Pieces
1) Stylish Maternity Jeans
Can we get an AMEN for some actually cute maternity jeans!? Absolutely love these from Abercrombie, and they will quickly become a spring capsule staple (grab them during their current sale!). The over-the-belly feature hugs nicely, and I appreciate the wider leg, wash, and knee distressing.
If the store is not having a sale when you snag, my friend told me that if you try to buy these in store, Abercrombie will give you a 15% discount. (This is their policy if they don’t carry your size, and most [if not all] stores don’t carry maternity sizes!) I also saw a few on Poshmark – worth checking. They are TTS because they sit really low. Some say to order up if you want a looser fit, but I think they’re already a looser fit through the legs. These are a 26 Short, for reference (I’m 5’4, 130 pounds pre-pregnancy, and wanted these to hit closer to the ankle for spring!).
PinkBlush also has a really cute straight leg frayed hem pair, pretty comparable in price to Abercrombie.
And these Levi’s from Amazon are cute, too.
2) Black Maternity Leggings
Can never go wrong with a supportive, over-the-belly pair of comfy leggings…that also happen to go with everything. These are the same brand as the biker shorts just below (see #3), and they are really nice – structured, soft, and (bonus) iPhone pocket.
Another option? These leggings. True, they don’t say maternity. But my SIL is pregnant, due this month, and has been wearing these for months. I love that they sell in a pack of three for constant rotation, and they’re buttery soft. I’m not sure I’d workout in these (the material isn’t as thick/supportive as the pair above), but I’ll definitely wear these out and about AND for lounging.
Another great option, Old Navy has two for $22 of their highly-rated ‘full-panel’ leggings. Some reviewers note to go up a size.
3) Over the Belly Biker Shorts
Over the belly biker shorts were definitely not in style when I was last pregnant, but I’m so pleased they are now. These will quickly become a spring maternity capsule fave. This pair from Amazon hug the belly and the baby and look super cute with white sneakers and a white t-shirt, tied above-belly. Or Bikenstocks + a chambray shirt.
Because these will transition so well into summer, I had to grab this adorable ribbed biker short maternity romper from PinkBlush. It’s so comfy and hugs all the right places (and despite major boob growth, no bra required over here!). If you’re new to PinkBlush and sign up for their email, you can save 25%.
4) Bodycon Dress
Would it even be a maternity capsule without an adorable bodycon dress?? I actually vote for two in this capsule. Pictured here is:
- A black midi dress, similar to this ribbed option from Lulus or this option from Amazon.
- And also a striped bodycon dress like this one from Old Navy, this similar option from Target, or this close (grey stripes) version from PinkBlush.
If you prefer a pop of color, Old Navy (…because again, they have a great maternity line) has this rose-hued option. I usually opt for the neutrals.
5) Babydoll Dress
Okay…so I did add some color here. A babydoll mini dress is a great option in a spring capsule. It’s super comfortable, stylish, and can be dressed up or down. It looks like Z Supply doesn’t carry this exact dress from last season, but it does have this adorable green gauze option.
From Amazon, we have this cute cuff-sleeved mini. And Lulus also has a really cute tiered mini that’s maternity-friendly as well as this floral print ruffled option.
6) Graphic T-Shirt
A carry-over from winter, an oversized graphic t-shirt is also a spring capsule must-have. In a maternity capsule, it looks super cute tied up above the bump. I still love this this neutral Fleetwood Mac t-shirt from Free People or this black Rockies t-shirt from Shein (which was a gift…and a site from which I’m trying to purchase not at all). Style with leggings, bodycon dresses, jeans, blazers, to name a few.
7) White T-Shirt
I decided to opt for a new white t-shirt this season (it is time – my previous favorite has seen better days). I love this versatile, truly goes-with-anything, SO SOFT, oversized boyfriend essential tee from Abercrombie. Need one in black, too.
8) Jumpsuit
My mom gifted me this tencel rib maternity & nursing jumpsuit from Quince soon after I found out I was pregnant, and I’m obsessed. It’s so, so soft, and the buttons easily undo so that it can transition into a nursing jumper once little man is in our world.
9) Overall Shorts
In the same vein as the jumpsuit above, overall shorts are a great spring (into summer) maternity capsule piece. The ones pictured here are from Z Supply and no longer sold this season, but PinkBlush carries a pair of maternity-friendly overall shorts in a brown-ish, cocoa-colored option. They also have this pair of overall shorts in black. Pair these with a chambray shirt (see below) + white sneakers, and you’re all set!
10) Chambray Shirt
A chambray shirt is one of my go-to layers. The one pictured here is vintage (and let me tell you – very, very worn), but this chambray option from Nordstrom Rack is really cute. As is this oversized option from Amazon.
11) Jean Jacket
A spring capsule screams denim jacket, and this classic distressed jacket from Old Navy goes with everything!
12) Ivory Blazer
In my winter capsule, I rotated regularly between a camel, tweed, and black blazer. This springtime maternity capsule calls for a lighter shade, like this ivory-hued blazer from Bohme. Pairs beautifully with leggings, bodycon dresses, and jeans.
13) Oversized Sweater
Every spring capsule still needs at least one comfy sweater for chillier temps. I’m wearing a vintage sweater that’s lasted multiple seasons, but here are a few other options.
- This incredibly soft alpaca sweater from Quince (in gray…cream would also be really cute this spring).
- Similarly, their same baby alpaca sweater with the diamond stitch.
- And, because I can’t stress enough the quality and prices of Quince’s sweaters, their organic cotton boyfriend crew sweater.
If you do the trick of wearing a sports bra over a bodycon dress, you can tuck the bottom hem of the sweater up into the sports bra for an over-the-bump look.
14) White Sneakers
White sneakers were a winter capsule staple and they remain a spring capsule maternity staple. These classic white sneaks from Vans are a great option – comfortable and wide enough for growing feet!
15) Birkenstocks (or Comparable Sandal)
Birkenstocks are so comfy on my pregnant feet! And they’re an essential shoe option in a spring maternity capsule. I love the Arizona slide sandals in white. I’ve had these for several years, and I return to them every spring & summer.
For a budget-friendly pair, Target has these really cute neida EVA two band slide sandals on sale.
Five Additional Pieces You Might Want in Your Spring Maternity Capsule
16) Comfortable Flats
I jumped on the Birdies bandwagon with the white sneakers (see above), and their flats truly do not disappoint. They are really comfortable and, like the sneakers, required no break in time. I went with a black pair (for versatility at work..and can’t ever go wrong with black flats), but they also have a ton of cute, neutral spring hues.
They’re not inexpensive, but they do offer a coupon for first-time purchasers. I also wanted to add in a pair of flats that would last several seasons (part of the purpose of a true capsule wardrobe = investing in some higher-quality pieces that will endure).
17) Maxi Dress
If you don’t already have a maxi in your closet, this can be another dress up, dress down staple, one that’s very comfortable with a growing bump. This brighter tiered maxi from Quince is so chic and pairs well with a number of other items in this capsule. And this black tencel jersey maternity maxi is super cute, too.
18) Oversized Sweatshirt
On chillier days (and comfier days), you might want to reach for an oversized sweatshirt. H&M has a lot of great, bump-friendly options:
19) Belly-Supporting Camis
Currently, I’m opting for t-shirts over camis. I know, though, when I’m transitioning to postpartum nursing attire, I’ll move back to these nursing-friendly, hug-it-all-in camis, which I also highlight in this baby registry post. These pair well with over-the-belly leggings, jeans, or shorts and are super comfortable.
20) Jean Shorts
If you’re in a part of the country where some spring days feel more like summer days, add another pair of cute maternity shorts into the capsule – of the denim variety. (Especially if, depending on your due date, the bump will be quite prominent during the summer months.) Abercrombie has a really cute pair of distressed cutoffs with a supportive belly band.
Here are two very similar options (option one from Etsy, option two from Amazon) for the structured rattan bag often featured above!
